Iceland Trail Teams
Iceland Volunteer Trail Teams
Enironment Agency volunteers
The Environment Agency's Volunteer Trail Teams work throughout Iceland's national parks and nature protection areas each summer on a programme that runs for 11 weeks. Our work is focused on the construction and maintenance of hiking trails, including a variety of practical tasks, from building stone drains to constructing timber boardwalks.
Trail Team volunteers pay their own travel costs to Iceland and are expected to make their own way to the programme starting point at Skaftafell, Vatnajökull National Park. Volunteers must also organise and pay for their own insurance for their trip. Volunteers are selected from applicants and do not pay a participation fee. During the programme food, travel and accommodation (often camping) are provided. No experience of trail work is required as all training is provided.
The remote worksites and basic living conditions make this programme both an adventure and a challenge. Applicants must be over 20 years old and have some experience of practical work, hill walking and camping.
