Volunteer opportunities

2007 Trail Team volunteers

The Environment Agency Volunteer Programme

Opportunities for International Volunteers

Environment Agency volunteer projects take place in Iceland's national parks, nature reserves and nature conservation areas. Our main task is the construction and maintenance of hiking trails, but our volunteers are involved in all aspects of practical nature conservation in these areas.

Our volunteer projects are organised in partnership with agencies and organisations across Iceland. Projects are carefully chosen and our teams are managed by local staff and trained volunteer leaders. Volunteer projects last from two weeks to four months.

The remote locations of many of our projects, basic living conditions at the camps and Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather make these projects both an adventure and a challenge.

ICV is proud to be listed in Green Volunteers

Volunteer projects in 2010:

BTCV Conservation Holiday Teams

Each summer the Environment Agency hosts a series of Conservation Holidays in partnership with BTCV. Volunteers pay a participation fee and must be over 18 years of age.

Working Abroad Teams

These special two-week wilderness management projects focus on practical conservation tasks and hiking trail repairs in Þórsmörk. Volunteers pay a participation fee and must be over 18 years of age.

Long-term volunteers - Trail Teams

Our Trail Teams start in June and the programme runs for 11 weeks each summer. The teams work throughout the country travelling between a series of trail construction and maintenance project sites. The Trail Teams live and work in some of the most remote and beautiful parts of Iceland. Volunteers are chosen from applicants and must be over 20 years old. There is no participation fee.

Long-term volunteers - Wilderness Management Teams

Our Wilderness Management Teams start in May and the programme runs for 11 weeks each summer. The work is focused on surveys, data collection and general management tasks within Iceland's remote nature protection areas. Volunteers are chosen from applicants and must be over 20 years old. There is no participation fee.

European Voluntary Service (EVS) placements

Youth Programme

EVS placements start in May and run for four months. Our long-term placement volunteers are involved in all aspects of the volunteer programme and work closely with our staff and other volunteer teams. EVS Volunteers are chosen from applicants and must be 20-30 years old. There is no participation fee and travel costs are funded by the European "Youth in Action" programme.
